Bee population is at an all time low not only throughout the LSU Campus but around the country.

Debra Coltharp, LSU Horticulturist says the death of these insects is mainly caused by the nicanoids on flowers throughout the campus. The bugs ingest the chemical killing them quickly.

She also says that many students are scared of the beehives in older trees located on campus. Students at LSU are are scared of the bees and their hives and she has receives calls for the removal of them.

There are many Issues taking place througout the country as well. Recent harsh winters that have been frozen well into spring which has been a major factor in the bee population and in Iowa with up to 70 percent destruction rate states says the Global Research Program.

Bees are one of the most important pollinators on earth and pollinate most fruits, nuts and vegetables. This industry brings in 15 million dollars in economic value throughout the country's agricultural industry and losing these insects could greatly impact our food industry and part of the United States economy.

LSU agriculture students are currently training to become beekeepers on campus to remove the them and take them to beekeeper’s hives throughout the Baton Rouge area. This is helping to save the population and keep those on campus from killing or asking the hives to be removed.
